Variety:
Malbec
Color:
Red
Other names:
Cot (France), Gamay (France), Malbeck (Argentina)
Varietal Notes:
Malbec is one of the traditional Bordeaux varietal types. It has somewhat fallen out of favor in France due to sensitivity to the climate, but has taken roots in both Argentina and Chile who are currently using it very successfully in single variety and blended wines.

Characteristics*:
It’s characteristics fall somewhere between a Cabernet and Merlot and can impart deep color, ample tannin, and a particular plum like flavor.
Aromas/Flavors*:
When allowed to hang just past indication of ripeness the grape will impart to wine its trait plum and anise notes. Otherwise, the wine produced can be more “green” in nature.
Food Pairing:
With its current Spanish influence Malbec fairs well with all types of grilled meats, spiced food, ethnic foods, and even light fair – sandwiches, burgers, etc.
Aging**:
Argentine Malbecs appear to age well

Examples***:
* Character, Aromas, and Flavors of wine produced from the above-mentioned grapes are based upon a general assessment of the variety. Winemaker results will vary.
** The ability to age is tied directly to the wine's chemical make-up. Aging in the context of a varietal assumes the wines produced can or tend to yield the correct chemical make-up. Winemaker results will vary.
*** Commercial Examples provided as varietal references for benchmarking. Winemaker results will vary.
