Variety:  Zinfandel

Varietal Notes:

Probably originated in the Balkan Peninsula; arrived in California in 1850’s. This versatile grape can be made in a variety of styles- light an fruity medium- bodied, rich and robust, White Zinfandel (Rose), Late Harvest and Port. Good all-purpose red wine. When labeled “Old Vine” it means the grapes are sourced from vines generally 35 years old or older.

Characteristics*:  Rich, deeply colored, high in alcohol, medium high in tannin
Aromas/Flavors*:  Blackberry, raspberry, spicy, jammy

As “Old Vine” the grape may deliver secondary characteristics like graphite, licorice and slate, and is often very spicy and earthy.
Food Pairing:  Soups, pasta, pizza, barbequed meats; leg of lamb, cheeses, chocolate desserts
Aging**:  Drink light ones now, heavier ones can age up to 8 years more
